Black Walnut Café – A Sugar Land Staple for Breakfast and Casual Dining

By Sara Loren, April 1, 2016. 3 min read.

Tucked into the heart of Sugar Land, Black Walnut Café has long been a neighborhood go to for casual breakfasts, relaxed lunches, and cozy evening meals. With its spacious dining room, warm lighting at night, and a menu that spans from pancakes to pasta, it has served as a convenient gathering place for families and friends over the years.

From brioche French toast and breakfast burritos to vegetarian pasta, pizza, coffee, and desserts, the variety is one of its strongest features.

Here is a balanced look at both experiences.

Why You Will Love It

  • Extensive breakfast menu
  • Variety of lunch and dinner options
  • Cozy evening ambiance
  • Comfortable seating for groups
  • Casual and family friendly setting

The Atmosphere

Black Walnut Café offers a relaxed and approachable dining environment. In the evenings, the lighting feels soft and cozy, and the chairs are comfortable enough to settle in for a longer meal or coffee break. It has historically been a place that offers more variety than many quick café style spots in the area.

During my earlier visits, the environment felt inviting and well maintained. On my most recent visit, however, the café appeared short staffed and slightly unkempt, which affected the overall experience.

Updated Review – April 1, 2016

On a recent Friday night, I stopped in for a café latte and a chocolate studded brownie.

The young lady who began taking our order disappeared mid transaction, and another employee stepped in to complete it. Both seemed overwhelmed and disorganized.

My latte arrived very sweet, flat, and cold. It did not come with a saucer, so I had to carefully hold the mug. The dessert display did not look very appealing, but I kept my order simple with the brownie.

Unfortunately, the brownie never arrived. I had to get up and ask for it, only to learn that it had been forgotten. When it was finally brought out, it was overly sweet.

The café felt short staffed, and the dining area was not as clean as I remembered. It no longer carried the same charm it once had.

Business Response

Reah J., Business Manager (Apr 4, 2016):

“Hi Sara, we are disappointed that your visit was not satisfactory. We would love to impress you more in the future and we hope we can win you back. Thanks again for sharing and have a great week.”

Previous Review – May 8, 2010

My earlier experiences were much more positive.

Breakfast

The breakfast menu was impressive. I enjoyed both the breakfast burrito and the French toast. The French toast was made with brioche, giving it a buttery and soft texture. The syrup paired beautifully with it.

The pancakes were creamy with a subtle hint of vanilla. It was the kind of breakfast that made me want to return.

Lunch

For lunch, I tried the vegetarian pasta. The fire grilled vegetables were full of flavor, though slightly charred. I also sampled my sister’s Greek 67 pizza, which was not listed on the menu at the time but could be requested. The pizza was loaded with gooey cheese and served with a side salad.

At night, the café felt cozy and comfortable, making it a pleasant place to unwind.

Overall Impression

Black Walnut Café in Sugar Land has long been known for its variety and comfortable setting. Earlier visits highlighted strong breakfast and lunch offerings, while my most recent experience reflected service and consistency concerns.

With improved staffing and attention to detail, it has the potential to regain the neighborhood charm that once made it a favorite.
