Sara's full firsthand review
Had the chance to try out Bonchon about two weeks ago with a good friend of mine. Its tucked in a nice and quiet plaza near WholeFoods Sugar Land. Bonchon means "home" in Korean, and this is a casual South Korean restaurant. There are quite a few locations spread out in the U.S. so its nice to have them in the neighborhood. My friend and I were seated immediately upon entering and the staff were all smiles. This joint has a unique and airy layout to it. Many tables to choose from and large windows towards the back of the place. I've only tapped into Korean cuisine earlier this year, so I was definitely intrigued by the menu. Mind you, i've had fusion Korean food, but this is more like fast food Korean. The menu is short and simple - nothing confusing. This place is known for their fried chicken - so thats an option that many choose from. My friend and I ordered the salmon avocado ball, shrimp shumai, chicken katsu, and a side order of kimchi. I enjoyed every dish for its own flavour, color, taste and texture. The salmon avocado ball reminded me of sushi. The texture of the salmon and avocado were smooth and creamy. There were a few different sauces on top and some crispy topping. Enjoyed the steamed shrimp shumai with honey dijon dressing. My friend wasnt too impressed with the dressing, but I liked the overall taste of this appetizer. The chicken katsu was crunchy, crispy and breaded. It was topped on long grain rice and served with broccoli. It was good but not my favorite. Pairing the chicken katsu with kimchi helped to bring out some flavor. Overall, the dishes were unique.. but I dont think I would specifically crave them again.. maybe the salmon avocado ball. Will definitely have to return and try something new off the menu.. such as the glass noodles and udon soup. The portions are alright.. and the prices are high. So this place has potential but lets hope the food and quality remains consistent. Would recommend at least giving it a go and trying it once.
What we tried
Sara tried the salmon avocado ball, shrimp shumai, chicken katsu, and a side order of kimchi. Some parts worked well, while others kept the visit from feeling like a standout experience.
